Fifty million plastic HK$10 banknotes will be available for exchange in banks for the first time today. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation said it expected demand to be high for the washable bills. Collectors are likely to seek out the note bearing the number "000001", which will be released onto the market and not auctioned for charity.

Meanwhile, a Democratic Party poll of 500 people found that more than 60 per cent thought only one bank should be allowed to print notes, as fewer patterns would make it easier for people to spot fakes.
